Circa 1885-86, Joshua Warren came to Friend, NE, invested $40,000 and built the Warren Building, home to the Warren Opera House & five retail spaces. Today, the Friend Historical Society members are stewards of the building, renovating it, and creating a destination for Nebraska.

The Warren Building once housed grocery, shoe, clothing and feed stores, among others. At left, Mr & Mrs Billy Scheidt, parked in front of the Scheidt family store. |
At the turn of the century, the Warren Building was a bustling part of Friend. Retail was prevalent at the street level & theatrical performances were enjoyed by many upstairs in the Opera House.
Today, the Warren Building is being renovated by the Friend Historical Society. Private donations and grant funds have helped to make the 4 spaces rentable for retail as well as for special events in the San Carlo Room & Welcome Center. The San Carlo, named for the theater that was the demise of the opera House, is a stunning 3100 sq ft venue for weddings, receptions & other large events. Next door, the Pour House Tasting Room welcomes guests from across the state to taste some of Nebraska's best wines. When renovations are complete, the effort will be refocused to restoring the Warren Opera House.

Thanks for making the 2nd Spring Ladies Luncheon event such a huge success!

Have you cruised past the south side of the Opera House lately? It is a flourishing courtyard bursting with donated flowers from supporters all over town. This courtyard will be dedicated during our Downtown Friend Festival in September. Mark your calendars to join us!
